Steven White No Longer City Employee

BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENT
In a terse announcement today from Communication Director Bill Lobdell, the City of Costa Mesa announced that Steven White is no longer a city employee.  The full text of that announcement reads as follows: "Effective today, January 25, 2013, Steven White is no longer employed by the City of Costa Mesa."

WAS HE FIRED?
Although it was not specifically stated in the announcement, it is logical to assume that White was fired by The City as a result of the decision by the District Attorney to charge him in this case and the city's own internal personnel investigation.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY CHARGED HIM
You will recall that earlier this week the Orange County District Attorney announced that White will be charged with various crimes in connection with supposed vandalism of political signs during the run-up to the November election.  You can read the Daily Pilot coverage of that story HERE.

COSTA MESA TAXPAYER'S ASSOCIATION VIDEO
White had been on paid administrative leave ever since he was identified on a very grainy video shown on the Costa Mesa Taxpayer's Association account on YouTube.  You can view it HERE.  The photo above is enhanced from that video.

A VERY, STUPID, COSTLY ACT
It is highly unlikely that any other sign vandals will be apprehended since most trails will have gone cold - if any existed in the first place.  If White did perform these acts of vandalism it was a very foolish act on his part.  According to the Daily Pilot account of the charges being filed, if convicted White faces the possibility of a year in jail, $1,000 fine and restitution.  The charge was misdemeanor vandalism.

Riggy and Mensy got their pound of flesh.

What's worse- what White is accused of, or Mensy's airport incident of 2006?

after dozens of signs stolen at that location they got their man on the first night out. good job! of course the other side thinks it was the fault of the victimized side, how dare they catch the perp? more coming from the PI investigation.

A "terse" comment from Lobdell. He really had to back-peddle after Mensinger opened his big mouth and let it slip that Mr. White "had" worked for the City, two days before he was fired. Mr. White has not been convicted of any crime, so how does he lose his job? Sounds like another lawsuit, thanks to our fiscally prudent council, and adds to Lanzillo's allegations that the corruption goes further up.

Or what is worse, torn signs or the Sandy Genis signs that were defaced in a very vulgar way?
Those weren't just vadalized on the spot. They were stolen, painted out the G, then spray painted with a stencil that changed the G to a P, little strbursts added, then placed in high visibility locations around town. I would love to catch that perp and see Sandy's campaign throw the book at him/her/them/it!

What a creep! Probably a very two faced creep, I'd hazard a guess.

definitely would be good to catch the perp who did Sandy's sign too. But at least we got one bad guy who decided he would be the last word on what signs are allowed. ugh, what an idiot. A "bestest" to boot! hope all the fools learn from this no matter what side you are on. Amazing that the fool seems to get a free pass because either you agree with him politically or the perp who did in your signs was not caught. Don't personalize it-it was a crime and an assault on the election process. All perps have equal chance of getting caught. He was just not the brightest or most clever. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Right Billy?

The guy was a City Hall employee featued in the OCEA Union magazine with a bunch of other Costa Mesa Uniom thugs getting ready to Union Walk to support Union activities.

I hope the DA is investigating how the Union insighted this guy to go oit and do harm. I hope the DA is investigating what other Union Thugs were involved. Do you think Billy Folsom shuts down his Union rah rah when he gets to work? Or doesn't bitch and moan about Council this or that im the break room where they both worked.

What took city hall so lomg to fire this violent thug? What are city hall working conditions? What are the highering standards? Does city hall ever do checks on existing emplouees for violent convictions? Has city hall given any training to managers

Did you see the Union spokeshole response? Nothing about one of their own.committing a violent act. Chose to allege withoit facts that politicians are corrupt yada yada

Remember this guy was on probation when he committed this violent act for a prior violent act

What's more "violent"- oppressing an airline clerk at JWA like Mensy allegedly did, or tearing a paper sign?

What's more "violent"- chest-bumping a local teacher like Mensy allegedly did, or tearing a paper sign?

First, let me say that vandalism - including destruction of campaign signs - is inexcusable. The D.A. should prosecute anyone suspected of such crimes.

However, I fail to see how this misdemeanor should be grounds for firing a City employee. Would the same action have been taken had he destroyed Obama or Romney signs? Would the same action have been taken had he vandalized a home or business, with no connection to the campaign? What's the connection between the crime and his job with the City of Costa Mesa?

And, in the meantime, the City paid him to not work for two months while he was on administrative leave pending investigation of a misdemeanor unrelated to his job.

I wonder who called the shots on this.

McCarthy on sign stealing, well as long as it's the opponents signs.
In the scale of what is going on in the city, missing signs is the least important issue I can think of.  What was the goal?  If someone, anyone, told these kids to steal these signs, both the kids and the director of said mischief suffer the wrath of being complete idiots.  Isn’t that punishment enough?  If anyone is feeling left out, I have two signs in my yard.  I’ll give you one.

valan2, you took the words out of my mouth. Do we fire every employee who is convicted of a misdemeanor? Like you, I thought all the sign vandalism should be stopped and those caught are subject to the rules of the court, but as someone else said, I see this ending in a lawsuit if he was, in fact, terminated. This seems we are bullying the bully.

He was not fired he QUIT on Friday. Enough is enough! He was tired of his family being harassed, followed around town and having damage done to their property. Did you read about that?? NO because the CITY had a confidential order in place. You all know those procedures, policies and rules that the councilMEN are above.

The councilmen caused this. not the employee. why blame him? He needed to do this. councilmen put the signs there. it's the councilmen's fault for feeding his need. they need to take sensitivity training if they think the employee was at fault. councilmen need to apologize NOW. (fisler too)

We can steal signs but they can't. We can deface signs but they can't. When we falsely portray ourselves as a Deputy Sheriff and flash a badge in doing so we do not punish that person we make him a council member.

Unlike how they are trying to portray this, it was not an act of violence, nor an assault. IF anything is proven, it might be called an act of civil disobedience and that's why we thankfully have unions.

In the grand scheme of things this whole sign stealing investigation was a complete waste of time. The "vandal" is being charged with a simple misdemeanor, a fine that he'll be able to pay off with the two months of City salary that he racked up while is was on "administrative leave".

I'm sure the DA's Office has better things to do then to pursue this very low level infraction. I bet the City Council called in a few favors to get try and get this pushed right to the top of the ongoing and ever rising stack of crimes waiting to be processed.

Well, folks, the above post from "Ask Billy" is a perfect example of why you shouldn't post comments while drunk.

And, by the way, I NEVER post comments here anonymously. I was amused by the statement that this boozer "inventoried" who was at the council meeting. Apparently this clown doesn't realize that anyone with a computer can watch the meetings live on televison or via streaming video.

Hello Geoff,

Your spelling is great.

Now answer the question. Do you ever post under another name?

Fact of the matter is that you cannot see who sits in the back row unless you are at the meeting. Buts facts are not your friend.

Looks like you are waking up angry today like most of your days.

I think the next meeting you should line up all the council critics and take a picture and then post it here so we can get a sense of who they are. Young or old, families or without children. Hairdo's that have not changed since the 1970's? A couple long crazy beards. A big hearing aid. Include their wives. Maybe have video so you can hear them talking during the taking of the picture

That would be an interesting picture

I NEVER post here under another name. All my comments appear with this one.

In fact, the camera frequently shows crowd shots that clearly show the back row.

What's with the fixation with who's at the council meeting, anyhow? Paranoia takes many forms. Have another cup of coffee (or 6) and return when you're feeling better.

Hear hear! Napoleon and his minions are running scared, especially with Genis joining Leece to keep an eye on his shenanigans.

Let's see. Who stuffs his face with snack food in Council Chambers, has earned the nickname "Village Idiot," and allegedly has alcohol on his breath regularly in public?

Even a paralegal can get the answer to this one.

Sadly, there will likely be smiles on the dais when some of the council members hear this news.
