Costa Mesa PR Jobs Announced

SPIN DOCTORS REQUIRED
For your reading pleasure, the announcement of the two (2) Public Affairs Managerial openings in the City of Costa Mesa has been released. You can read it HERE. These are the jobs presently held by contract employees Bill Lobdell and Dan Joyce.

COOL FLIER

Based on what has been presented on this snazzy flier, both of these jobs sound pretty cool - and pretty well compensated. Up
to $136,000 annually, plus some pretty nice benefits, too. Retirement - 2.5% @ 55; $1,458.00 monthly towards medical, dental and long-term disability insurance within a flexible benefits plan; $50,000 term life insurance; $50,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance; a Retiree Medical Program (presently suspended); 10 days Executive Leave annually; 12 paid holidays, including 16 floating holiday hours; 11.5 vacation days per year, increasing to 26.5 after twenty years.

FREEZE-PROOF?
So, take your tim
e and read through this very nice flier and wonder, as I do, whether these slots are part of the present hiring freeze - the "Begging For Bodies" program that requires our top city executive, CEO Tom Hatch, to beg the City Council every time he wants to hire a person.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a very bold prediction: they will somehow find a way to hire Lobdell and Joyce as FTEs. Just a hunch...

With a city council like ours, they will need to spend way more money than that to stay in office. More and more people are wise to their deceit.

And, by the way, in case you're wondering...

Both Lobdell and Joyce have had long test drives in those jobs, for which they have been paid well. IF we need those jobs filled, then these guys seem to have been doing a good job and should be considered. It doesn't matter whether you like the messages that come out of Lobdell's office or not - anyone in that job would be sending out the party line. I don't mind receiving good news. I DO mind when the bad news is spun to make it seem insignificant or not newsworthy. If Lobdell is offered the job and takes it he'll probably be taking a pay cut - swapping bucks for benefits and some degree of permanence. It might be close when you pencil in the value of the benefits including the paid time off. Regardless - that's the value the City has placed on the jobs, and there have been no pay increases since 2009 except in the case of promotions.

I guess West adds a significant value in your life because you spent a few minutes out of your day to come on here and comment.

What do you think?

Sorry Geoff, I know you don't need anybody sticking up for you but I love these LOSERS that come on here and spend their time negatively commenting with no significant facts!

C'mon Man!!!

P.S. At least Barry P. comments with facts (i.e. lies) reported by the council...=)

$136,000??? AND $1400+/MONTH medical ( it a month by the way ) and 21 PAID DAYS OFF????

That is more then a Battion Chief gets with the Fire Department.

Guess saving the butts of the Council when they screw up, with press and political spins is more important then someone that SPENT THEIR CAREER SAVING AND HELPING THE PEOPLE OF COSTA MESA.

Geoff,
What ever happened with the new Recreation Manager position as well? I heard the two "final interviews" were to be held on the Monday & the very same Tuesday when appointed-member Mensinger demanded a hiring freeze in his "big-boy voice".

I thought "attracting young families" to Costa Mesa, but much more importantly: KEEPING THEM IN CM was the top priority. Or is it, Little Lord Farquar's future congressional campaign-platform? You know, "The 2-Tier Pension System Reform"?

Man, these guys spin more crap than the "Tasmanian Devil" on Redbull.

Were I offered one of those jobs, and got it, I'd ask for union representation. I'm sure the Teamsters would oblige. Then I'd be fired. The administration's faux hiring freeze apparently applies only to the city bargaining units. Another very clear indication of union busting by our pathetic city council.

These positions are just right down ridiculous. Allan Roeder ran this City competently and w/integrity for years without the necessity to hide behind spin masters. This is just another ploy for Tom Hatch to hide behind his incompetence and ability to speak as a City Manager and represent the citizens. It is time the citizens of CM woke up and began to demand what they are paying for, enough with the facade of fake management.

Lets not forget they are hiring TWO of these PR people... so this useless, pompous, arrogant council. ( 4 of 5 ) are willing to shell out about $300,000 for someone to turn the crap they are spewing into sunshine and lies.
WHICH IS THE MORE THEN THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS WITH A POLICE HELICOPTER.

Explain that to me.
God, the priorities of this screwed up council are F'd up.

The flyer states: $1,458 toward medical but doesn't specify monthly or annually. Actually, it is monthly, which equates to $17,496 annually. Council members get even more than that - $1,595 mo., $19,140 annual. No wonder Monahan has been on council so long; insuring medical for 6 kids and 2 adults must be costly. Compare that to "general employees" who receive $799 month. You know...the "general" employees that pick up the mattresses dumped all over town; the "general" employees that fill the potholes; the "general" employees that unclog the restrooms at the park; the ones who repair the fire trucks; the ones who ensure clearance of the storm drains before the rain, so your property won' t flood.....the ones who don't wear a tie and actually get dirty! So, Bever should only get half his medical contribution since he's half there. Fire & Police get even less than "general" employees, and they are putting their lives on the line. Yadda, yadda...I'm done..for now.

What a shameful mess they have brought to our beloved city, staff, and citizens. These men do not represent me, a 50 yr city resident. These men are running rampant against the better interest of this city's citizens they supposedly represent. What happened to a 2nd tier retirement??? These positions qualify for retirement benefits with CALpers!!!!!!!!

Grandpa always said: "The truth can run around naked, you have to dress up a lie." Apparently when you are prone to telling lies, you hire people to dress them up for you.

What I wonder is how the men on council sleep at night. They claim to be Christian men. Is that because they are supposed to "be" that or say they "believe" because it's the trappings one should present to establish good conservative bonafides? If they believe, how can they settle their lies with God?

There will be a day when these men will stand before the Bema Seat and have to settle the score for their lives. Perhaps they should stop wearing their alleged faith as a frock.

Proverbs 1:7 says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

These men have shown no wisdom or discernment in any of their endeavors; on council or in business. If they value their faith, perhaps they should reevaluate themselves and take Proverbs 1:7 to heart, for they are fools.

the council is way ahead of all you whiners. you are complaining today about what happened yesterday while plans for the first six months of next year are alrady finalized by council. they are no working on the next fiscal year. you whiners need some vision and some plan if you want to play with the big boys, otherwise you are doomed to a life of complaining and scratching your head wondering what just happened and how did it happen. Your unions have bad leaders and following genis and her complaints just leave you farther behind. I am available to help you out of your quandry but you must shed genis, leffler, ridge, beradino, etc. as a cleanse, forget about the past and its pain, and be ready to embrace a bold vision. Then I think about Fullerton, where one Council Member thinks there was a cover up and there are many issues with their PD.

What are the possibilities of this occurring here in Costa Mesa? We have not had leaders in so many positions for so long. I honestly think the chances are high.

To Nervous nervous: a contract is a contract. Union or not. If a party or person is not upholding the terms of a contract, and you think it's okay, then sign some home improvement contracts with me, so when I don't uphold to my contractual obligations, you won't be upset or try to sue. Stop blaming everything on the unions, it's just a contract like dozens of other contracts in place.

No error on your part, Pot Stirrer, I was pointing out the fact that they omitted it was a monthly contribution on the flyer. On purpose, I imagine; because that will make Council even more mad when you throw in an additional $17,496 on top of that $136,000 salary. Talk about TRANSPARENCY!

Yeah, we'll see who they hire....hope it's not the 'shoe-in". With all the advancements in technology & marketing, I'm sure there are better qualified candidates out there than Joyce & Lobdell. I bet they receive the maximum amount of
applicants.

"We can't afford these pensions", but they can afford 2 more positions at up to $134K @ 2.5% PERS? Wonder what Lobdell's total compensation will look like, and if the Rig/Men cheerleaders will turn against him when they see his total package over $200K. Doubt it, they'll justify the continued nonsense. Of course it is affordable, they killed ABLE, making people believe it was a savings of over 2 million dollars, they eliminated positions, and soon they will outsource half the city.

Well done.

Funny, Nervous... I didn't think the council was allowed to plan so far ahead without the input of their constituency. Those discussions are supposed to take place in public. Makes one wonder...about the corruption that lies ahead. Glad to see we have that visionary Monahan already declaring to run again. When do term limits take him out of the equation? And can Mensinger get elected, since he wasn't this time around?

Geoff, the council takes another victim. As of today, the "Acting Fire Chief" gives up and steps down.

This council is making working in Costa Mesa miserable. Every department head that has to deal with them is walking away.

At what point can the employee's get a good lawyer and claim a hostile work environment?

Who in their right mind would ever come to Costa Mesa to work if they didnt have to.

I swear the Costa Mesa name should change to ONE FLEW OVER THE COOKOO'S NEST. I just wonder which employee is going to rip the sink from the ground and throw it threw the wall to ESCAPE.

Just thought you should know.

Mike M,
i am just telling all the whiners that they are very far behind and need a vision. I would bet the council has some less solid plans that extend out five years or more, growing more solid as the length of time shortens. If they are not already solidly six months ahead they are not doing their job. This is why it is disappointing to see Leece always saying things are moving too fast for her. You cannot be reactionary and just a button pusher to govern. Their enemies oppose, the council's job is to propose, float some trial balloons and let genis go nuts. They probably will float some fake ones just to occupy her time and keep her eye off the ball while she is distracted by the shiny objects they reveal for her wonderment. As to your other queries: Monahan will term out after winning this election. Mensinger already has been voted in by the council and is considered an elected official and subject to all the rules of elected officials. That's why you see him sitting up there-he won! Ran a great campaign and convinced a sitting council member to resign. Brilliant. Now she sits in the front left at every cc meeting, works for KOCI or something. Planning ahead does not have to be in public. They just cannot reach a consensus. None of this is unique to Costa Mesa. Again, I am available to help you all make the jump from whining about what has happened and to help propose things you would like to see happen. For the good of your city you should consider proposing, not opposing. Genis goes so far in opposing she actually goes to neighboring cities council meetings to oppose CM. It always fails. doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result has been defined as a disorder.

"Stephen Mensinger. When Mensinger is not being paid $15-a-day to fulfill his civic duty, he earns bukoo bucks to preside over Irvine-based developer SunCal's multifamily division. In essence, he's in charge of the apartments, townhomes and condos that are included in SunCal projects.

One such project is the delay-plagued Marblehead oceanview project in San Clemente. Register business columnist Jonathan Lanser reports on his real estate blog today that among the projects bankruptcy court-bound Wall Street giant Lehman Bros. was financing was Marblehead.

"We elected the 3 to make the very decision to appoint Mensinger." Well, that's a lie. In the elction that seated Riggster, neither Monahan nor Bever were in the race. In fact, when they last ran, Mensinger wasn't even on the radar.

Actually, Monahan and Bever were elected before any of this stuff was on the radar. And as is often forgotten, Monahan voted for the same contracts Leece gets slain for.

Riggster made his alliances before the last election took place, made his promises and then he got his pal seated. Not saying it wasn't leagal, it's just a fact that Mensinger was not elected by the people. You know, like our system is supposed to work. My bet is if he had to run for the seat he is in, or if he runs to keep it, he will have an up hill battle. I hear tell people are already lining up to speak to his "character".

Eugene, of course people are going to run a campaign against Mensingers character. That is a losing campaign as are most negative campaigns. Again, propose not oppose. If there are talented people with vision to oppose him they hve a chance. If they are just complainers or character assasins they will go down. One's world is how one makes it to be. Who wants a negative person?
