As promised, each of the four Costa Mesa City Council candidate forums/debates are now available for viewing on streaming video and/or in the rotation on Costa Mesa Television.  Those may be seen on Channel 24 (Time Warner Cable) or Channel 99 (ATT U-Verse).  I think you'll find these programs valuable as you make your decisions on which candidates to choose on November 6th, and whether or not to vote in favor of Jim Righeimer's Charter scheme. Costa Mesa United Forum Cancelled!

EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY IS CANCELLED
Around noon today, September 15, 2012, the leadership of Costa Mesa United announced that the candidate forum they had scheduled for next Thursday, September 20th, has been cancelled.

THEIR PRESS RELEASE
Here is the text of their press release:

The Board of Directors of Costa Mesa United has decided to cancel their political forum scheduled for Thursday, September 20 at the Neighborhood Community Center in Costa Mesa.

“When reviewing the potential questions, we realized that two of the candidates, Colin McCarthy and Steve Mensinger, both who presently serve on the CMU board, could have a distinct advantage,” said CMU President Gordon Bowley.

“The last thing we want to do is give the impression that Costa Mesa United would somehow be seen as influencing the election,” continued Bowley.

“What we’d like to do is invite all candidates to discuss the importance of the more than 10,000 local youth sport participants, their fields, equipment and financial needs, and post their views on our website,” said Bowley.

The CMU website is www.costamesaunited.com.

Originally, the forum was scheduled to include not only city council candidates, but also those also running for school board posts. That all changed when no one stepped up to challenge the existing school board trustees and they were automatically returned to office for another term.

A DISSAPOINTING, BUT APPROPRIATE MOVE
While many of us were looking forward to a lively discussion of issues on their agenda - Academics, Athletics and Activities - I cannot criticize them for this move.  Almost certainly Steve Mensinger and Colin McCarthy would have had a leg up at this forum.  The other four candidates invited - Gary Monahan, Sandy Genis, John Stephens and Harold Weitzberg - while knowledgeable on these issues, might have been playing catch-up.  So, this seems like a fair move.

UNUSUAL COMMENT...
I thought the third paragraph was a little unusual, since my impression of ALL the forums is that, through the vetting of issues and having questions answered by candidates, they would certainly "influence the election".
FEET TO THE FIRE CHARTER DEBATE NEXT
So, the next event on the campaign schedule will be the Feet To The Fire Charter debate between its sperm doner, Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer and former council woman and current Newport Mesa Unified School District Trustee Katrina Foley on October 15, 2012.  More on that later.

Labor Day And The Replay Schedule

MARKING THE DAY
As we mark the 130th anniversary of the creation of Labor Day in this country I think it's important to remember what this was supposed to be all about.  You can read an official history of Labor Day, HERE.  The first paragraph sets the tone:

"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."

GETTING AWAY
Like many Americans I celebrated this day, at least in part, by escaping from the chaos of the City to a more peaceful place, to celebrate the last holiday of the summer and to remember what it's all about.

SMALL TOWN AMERICANA
My little escape was to a small town a few hundred miles away where Labor Day is a BIG DEAL.  It's a three-day celebration that involves a parade through town with the kind of things you'd expect in small town Americana.
The football team on a flat-bed truck
High school marching bands
Local patriot bikers
Service club members strutting their stuff
 "Scouts" on parade
Shriners in mini-cars
The local bicycle club
Local children celebrating their rich culture
Clowns scaring the kids
An honest-to-goodness Marine marching band
Classic cars hauling dignitaries
And, A Presbyterian preacher on a pinto pony
You know, all the usual stuff...

INSPIRATIONAL
Later that Marine Band gave an inspiring concert after most of us indulged ourselves with roasted chicken or beef and watched the kids on the rides.  It was not unlike what Costa Mesa's Fish Fry celebration once was.
AH, THE GOOD OLD DAYS...
The next day over 100 hot rods were on display for us to salivate over and recall the days when we owned cars like those.  It sure did evoke lots of memories.

WHAT IRONY!
As hard as I tried I couldn't help observe the great irony that this holiday marks.  This weekend the entire nation marks a day honoring "labor" - as described in that paragraph above - and yet in Costa Mesa we have elected leaders who seem determined to expunge our city of the workers who represent that labor!  Over the past eighteen months we've seen what amounts to a methodical plan to eject workers from our city and to make the lives of those remaining miserable.  I found myself wondering how those local politicians marked this weekend.  Did they celebrate with their fingers crossed behind their backs?  Quite honestly, just the thought of some of them glad-handing at celebrations while scheming to decimate the ranks of municipal workers makes me want to puke.

THANK YOU....
To all of us who have earned the right to celebrate this holiday through the sweat of our brow and service to the community - thank you for all you have done.

A BUSY WEEK AHEAD
We have a short, yet very busy, week ahead of us.  I'll report more on that in another post.  However, I do want to remind you that the video of the excellent Mesa Verde Community, Inc., Candidate Forum from last week is still available for viewing on Costa Mesa Television - Channel 24 on Time Warner Cable and Channel 99 on ATT UVerse.  Here's the play list as it is currently being displayed on the City website.  I don't know if they will continue this forum in the rotation as other forums are held.  For example, on the 5th there is the first of two Feet To The Fire Forums, so the Mesa Verde event may drop off the schedule.

Candidate Forum Replay Schedules

CAMPAIGN CRAZINESS CONTINUES
Reports from around the town today indicate that the pre-election craziness continues. We hear via friends and neighbors that hundreds of McEvoy/Leece signs have been stolen.. don't know for sure. We hear that one activist familiar to many has been seen "leapfrogging" Righeimer signs over McEvoy signs. Tuesday cannot come too soon for me!

REPLAY SCHEDU
LES
To help you understand each of the candidates a little more, below I present the replay schedule for the four (4) candidate forums held this year. These are also available for viewing via streaming video so I've provided those links, too.

KUDOS TO EASTSIDERS AND CMTV
Thanks very much to my good
friends and neighbors from the Eastside Costa Mesa Neighbor's Group and to Dane Bora and Brad Long from Costa Mesa Television for collaborating to present a video view of the Eastside Neighbor's forum. This forum was, in my opinion, the best of the bunch, so I'm glad a wider audience has a chance to see it. As you know, budget constraints prohibited CMTV from recording that event. However, Eastsider Syndy Neyland made a tape of it, which she provided to CMTV, who worked some technological magic and have made it available to us for viewing. Kudos to all.

Costa Mesa United Candidate Forum Tomorrow

COSTA MESA UNITED FORUM WEDNESDAY
Tomorrow evening, Wednesday, October 6th, Costa Mesa United will host the next Costa Mesa Candidate Forum. The event will be held at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Avenue (Lions Park). The formal event will run from 6-8:30 p.m. but Rich Dunn, who is helping organize the event, tells me that the doors will open at 5 for the candidates to set up their tables and for a little meet and greet. Water and coffee will be available.

COUNCIL AND SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
As was the case with the previous forum last week, this will be a hybrid and will feature a format unlike any in recent memory. In this forum all the candidates for Costa Mesa City Council plus the candidates in contested elections for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Trustees will be on the dais together to be interrogated by a panel on issues of common interest to both the City Council and School Board. The theme is Academics, Athletics and Activities.

SELECT PANEL WILL INTERROGATE
Moderator Gordon Bowley, President of Costa Mesa United, will guide a panel of interrogators comprised of Daily Pilot Editor John Canalis, Newport Beach Independent Publisher Tom Johnson, Time-Warner Cable Regional Producer Valerie Starn and Daily Pilot Sports Editor Steve Virgen. Dunn advises me that audience questions may be taken at some point in the proceedings.

CMTV WILL TAPE FOR LATER VIEWING
This event will be taped by Costa Mesa TV for later viewing, so if you can't make the event you'll be able to see it either on CMTV, Channel 24 (99 on ATT Uverse) or on streaming video on the city's web site. In a related matter, the tape of the previous forum last week should be available for viewing sometime Wednesday.

What's Ahead...

STUDY SESSION TUESDAY...
Tuesday the Costa Mesa City Council will hold a study session at 4:30 in conference Room 1A at City Hall during which they will discuss some interesting items.

GRAFFITI ORDINANCE
1 - Amendments to the Graffiti Ordinance - The council first addressed this issue in March, then kicked the can down the street to "a future study session", which appears to be Tuesday. Theoretically, they will discuss modifications to the current ordinance - we assume to tighten up some areas in question. We'll find out Tuesday.

E-VERIFY
2 - Potential Utilization of E-Verify - Lame duck Mayor Allan Mansoor requested this item be brought forward for discussion. We can only assume this is one of his schemes promised at his press conference last spring and during the council meeting at which the controversial - and meaningless - "Rule of Law City" resolution was passed.

MANSOOR WANTS GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION
Based on the staff report, it seems that the mayor wants the federal E-Verify process to be required in the City employment process; be included in future City contracts/agreements for contracts and subcontracts; every employer seeking a new business license and RENEWALS of business licenses and "potentially other alternatives that may be discovered during the staff research.

SEEMS A LITTLE ODD...
I don't know how you feel about this, but for a "less government is better" Republican, as Mansoor professes to be, to be proposing such onerous government interference in private businesses seems mighty strange to me.

RESIDENTIAL WASTE HAULING FRANCHISE FEES
3 - Residential Waste Hauling Franchise Fees - This one is also very interesting, since the City isn't responsible for residential waste hauling in Costa Mesa - that responsibility falls within the purview of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, a separate, distinct organization which was spun off from the City many years ago. The final sentence in the Staff Report says: "However, it will take policy-level direction by the Board of the Sanitary District and the City Council to effect further research and any substantial change." Gee, no kidding!

WHAT ABOUT GARY?
And where, might I ask, is Gary Monahan in all this. Will he have to remove himself from the discussions both as a councilman and a director of the Sanitary District? Seems like it.

...FOLLOWED BY A SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL CLOSED SESSION

Immediately following the Study Session the City Council will move to the council chambers for a special closed session meeting to discuss negotiations with the employee bargaining units. It seems likely that this meeting will only be in chambers for a few minutes - to read into the record the agenda and take public comments. They would then adjourn to another venue - a nearby conference room - for the remainder of the meeting.

URGENT ACTION IS NECESSARY
This special meeting is necessary because four of the five bargaining units are working without a contract since September 1. The City is in dire straits budget-wise - we were told at the last council meeting that we are still over $9 million in the hole for this fiscal year. Without concessions from the bargaining units it is more than likely that even more staff cuts will have to be made. There simply is not enough money to cover all the expenses.

THREE MORE CANDIDATE FORUMS PLANNED
At this point there are three more candidate forums scheduled that involve Costa Mesa Council candidates.

NEWPORT/MESA FEET TO THE FIRE MEDIA CANDIDATE FORUM
The next one scheduled was announced the end of last week in articles in both the Orange County Register and the Daily Pilot. This one, scheduled for Thursday, September 30th, at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center in Lions Park, is called the "Newport/Mesa Feet to the Fire Media Candidate Forum" and theoretically will involve City Council candidates for both Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. I don't recall any such forum in the past. We assume the questions will be restricted to areas of mutual interest to both cities - particularly since there may be nine candidates attending and at least five interrogators.

PLENTY OF EGOS TO GO AROUND
This event will involve a panel of prominent local journalists. So far John Canalis of the Daily Pilot, Tom Johnson of the Newport Independent, Frank Mickadeit of the Orange County Register, Gustavo Arellano of the OC Weekly and Norberto Santana, Jr. of the Voice of OC will be panelists and the irrepressible, vivacious Barbara Venezia, columnist for the Register will act as the Mistress of Ceremonies. The event will be from 7-9 p.m., with the doors opening at 6:30.

COSTA MESA UNITED FORUM
Next up will be an even more unusual event. This will be the recently announced forum sponsored by Costa Mesa United at which Costa Mesa Council candidates and Newport Mesa Unified School District candidates will be grilled on items of mutual interest and responsibility - as the flier announcing the event says, Academics, Athletics and Activities. The event, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6th, will also be held at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center and will be moderated by Costa Mesa United Board President Gordon Bowley.

EASTSIDE COSTA MESA NEIGHBORS GROUP FORUM
The final forum of which I am aware will be hosted by the Eastside Costa Mesa Neighbors Group on Thursday, October 14th, also at the Neighborhood Community Center beginning at 6:30 p.m., although there is some question about the actual venue at this moment.

CMTV WILL COVER EACH EVENT - IF POSSIBLE
If staffing scheduling permits each of the above forums will be covered by Costa Mesa Television (CMTV) for broadcasting at a future date. It is my understanding that they will join the first forum in the rotation on CMTV until after the election on November 2nd. They would also be available for viewing via streaming video on the City web site. None will be televised live unless the venue is changed to the Costa Mesa City Council chambers, where the infrastructure is in place.
