Righeimer & Joyce Off To China
TROLLING FOR TOURISTS IN CHINA
The Costa Mesa Conference & Visitor Bureau announced today that Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer and Interim Public Affairs Manager Dan Joyce will join Susan O'Brien Moore, Vice President of the Executive Board of the Convention and Visitor Bureau, on a 7-day trip to China to "explore a possible sister city relationship to boost Chinese tourism and business opportunities in Costa Mesa."
PLEASE, SAY IT'S A ONE-WAY TRIP
According to the press release, the Conference and Visitor Bureau will pay the costs for O'Brien Moore's and Joyce's travel expenses. Righeimer will personally pay for his trip. Is it too much to hope that he's just buying a one-way ticket?
GOOD LUCK TO THEM
I have no doubt that this kind of a trip - some might call it a boondoggle - is necessary in the normal course of business development for our city. Personally, I hope it bears fruit and ends up generating more business and tourism for our city and our region.
COINCIDENTAL DATE
One thing did catch my eye, though. This little week-long adventure begins August 16th - the date of the canceled city council meeting. You know, the one that was canceled because the council didn't have enough to do on that day. I'm sure it's a coincidence that a Righeimer boondoggle occurs on that date, right? Sure it is...
PLACE YOUR TAKE-OUT ORDERS SOON
So, we hope Righeimer and Joyce bring home the bacon, so to speak. In that light, I'll take some sweet and sour pork, please.

Boondoggle? He's paying his own way, taking time away from his family and business to pursue business opportunites for our City. I'm sure he'd rather spend that money on a trip with his family. We know you hate the guy, but at least report what the story is. Boondoggle this is not.
I said what it is... and I said he's paying his own way... and I acknowledged that it's a normal part of business development. Get over it!
Good Luck to them !! Thanks Mr. Righeimer for paying your own way and there are many of us who hope it is safe trip and that you have a roundtrip ticket. Amazing how you can do something that is good and immediately be called out on it with the added hopes you don't return. Ignore the haters, they are moving on to HB anyway.
My guess:
The Riggmarshal is going to China to learn how to re-create certain events from Tiananmen Square here at Triangle Square..
So with the Mayor De Facto out of town, will vice chancellor Menssy be in charge?
Don't stop
Now there's a disturbing image..... people bowing to Righeimer. (shudder)
Jim Righeimer:
First of all, thank you for your very informative commentary at the last council meeting Jim. It was very well received all across town.
Thanks also for all the 40 hour weeks we know you put in, for only part time pay.
Personally, I think the city should be paying ALL costs associated with your trip to China.
Geoff West:
Thanks for letting us know about this China trip Geoff, however, you have to give Jim credit for his efforts to improve Costa Mesa.
What are you doing (at your expense) to help the city? I hate to say this, but merely giving your opinion pales in comparison with actually taking some constructive action.
It's not that your readers don't appreciate you Geoff (because we do), but sometimes you need to step back and give people credit for what they do.
With my cynical hat on (it's rarely off anymore, sadly) I note that candidates for higher office find ways of doing things that "demonstrate" their qualifications to handle the demands of higher office.
I also note that Mr. Righeimer is close to Mr. Rohrabacher who has developed a reputation as a well-travelled member of the House.
Plus Mr. Righeimer has bluntly said he's not interested in going to Sacramento. Note that he did not say he wasn't interested in Washington DC.
On a positive note, it may be a positive move to get a beachhead in such a wealthy part of China. I just hope we don't find in the future that this trip's stated goal has been turned on its head, and we've become a beachhead for yet another Chinese invasion of good ol' US of A.
Why so worried? I'm reading a new (May 2011) book, Death by China, by locals Peter Navarro and Greg Autry. Basic message: China is eating us for lunch in every conceivable way. One simple example: they've cornered the market in Vitamin C. They have 90% of the world market share.
I hope our emissaries don't sign any contracts over there. Given the Chinese slyness and ruthlessness, China might end up owning South Coast Plaza!
(btw, they could buy it outright if they wanted to; their $2 trillion in U.S. foreign reserves is enough to "... buy a controlling interest in all the big American companies listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, including giants like Microsoft, Exxon, and Walmart -- and still have enough cash left over to buy up majority stakes in Apple, Intel, and Ford" according to the book.)
First you write that you hope Righeimer buys a one way ticket, then you write you hope he brings home the bacon. You don't know what you want. Just do the right thing and acknowledge that Righeimer is doing a good thing for the taxpayers of this city. I'm no Righeimer fan but even I know to tell him when he does something right.
Jim Righeimer:
First of all, thank you for your very antagonistic commentary at the last council meeting Jim. It was very well understood all across town just what a pompous man you are.
Thanks also for all the 40 hour weeks we know you put in trying to dismantle the city, for only part time pay.
Personally, I think the city should be paying ALL costs associated with your recall.
Some Credit is Due Here:
Thanks for letting us know about your obvious man crush, however, you have to give Jim credit for his efforts to improve his pocket books at the cities expense.
What are you doing (at your expense) to help destroy the city? I hate to say this, but merely giving your opinion pales in comparison with actually taking some non constructive action.
It's not that we readers don't appreciate you Some Credit is Due Here (because we do), but sometimes you need to step back and wipe the brown stuff from you nose and open your eyes.
unanimous, not me, kiddo... I'm staying right here, with a good view of the carnage.
hbrocks, I, too, am worried about the stability of the hair with all that bowing.. :-)
Some Credit Is Due Here,
OK - I'll give him credit - when he's done something positive. So far he's just running roughshod on the city and its employees. He has caused only turmoil, demonstrated disdain for the residents of this city that care enough to actually speak out and plays fast and loose with the rules.
Mr. Righeimer has told me more than once he is NOT interested in higher office. He has said his young family is more important than Sacramento. So all you folks that continue to use this attack at every opportunity as a means to discredit him, find a new one. It is nonsense.
If Jim wanted to run for higher office to include governor or president, I would support him enthusiastically. I would give my money, time and support. The courage he has displayed in these very trying months, his ability to keep cool and level headed, his logical approach to complex problems has shown that he is quite capable of handling this and bigger jobs.
Jimmo, please keep up the good work and DO NOT STOP!!!
"The courage he has displayed in these very trying months, his ability to keep cool and level headed, his logical approach to complex problems has shown that he is quite capable of handling this and bigger jobs."
Oh Capt. Kirk, please. What courage has he displayed? His ability to keep cool, obviously you were not at the last City Council meeting nor at the meeting with the Sanitary District where he had a total meltdown. What bigger jobs has he had to show how capable he is? He is the biggest pompous jerk that I have witnessed in a long time. Maybe you should return to the Enterprise and take Righeimber with you.
You know this is not news. Many cities have sister cities.
What does Jim Righeimer actually do .......to make so much money he can altruistically venture off to China for all of our benefit?
I'm just asking.........how does he make all his money ?
Coming from a person that ... all the time is questiones about my work status.......where's his endless money bank coming from?
A China boondoggle aint cheap.......especially now that the Teaparty is leveraging the dollar.
What about finding jobs/industty in our city, county and country. What about our citizens and our nation's economy. How many objects do we need to have marked "Made In China" that fall apart soon after using?? Righeimer is not representing this citizen, how dare he say he represents the citizens of Costa Mesa. Obviously the few who have responded to this are his friends, so be it, but get real folks, he has u boondoggled.
Guy Smiley, you made my night... hilarious
According to the city website we already have a sister city in Australia and that has served one purpose: teachers exchanged visits to learn about each others culture. Where is the business opportunity?
When you hear "Master Race", you know it's Nazi in origin.
When somebody uses the phrase "running dogs", you know he's from a ChiCom background.
"Just and lasting" comes from the middle east.
"Improver" or "improve" -- Costa Mesa Press, or one of MM's sycophants.
'Nuff said.
So this is where he is going?

It looks perfect. Righeimer loves communist HOA laws, that's for sure. Judging by all of the empty apartments, it looks like Bethany Group and SunCal might have already been there.
JR will have no trouble identifying his luggage at the airport in China. It's the carpetbag.
Righeimer is no doubt in love with their communist lifestyle.

Unfortunately California is starting to get more and more pollution from Chinese coal. The obvious is mercury. We can now only eat fish once a week because of all of those coal fired plants. Now we are also starting to get more and more particulate matter as well:

Jimmo please go back to fountain valley and don't let the door hit you in the @$$
Yeah, Doomsday, I agree. Scotty, beam them up!
Junkets like this are political stepping stones, but this is clashing with my Republican ethic: What happened to Made In America? Keep jobs onshore and support AMERICAN Enterprise? Thank God I'm not paying for this trip. Conservative taxpayers get annoyed at (this Council's) frivolous spending. Plenty for pet projects, not enough to preserve important elements of the City structure and services we invested our hard earned tax money in over the years. Sure we need to conserve and adjust financially, but not to gut our City. They can start by reigning in their own spending of our money. Every Council and City Manager before them has been able to speak for themselves without hiring expensive spin doctors. They invited lawsuits by their recklessness, now they should step up and grab the opportunity to save the City money. If they were half the politicians they think they are, they'd find a way to get everyone at the table and work things out. Quit giving our money to attorneys.
Dear Mr. Rig-hinder,
We are very hurt that you are visiting China instead of our better place, Korea, the north part.
Your opinions are the same as ours:
Unions bad. Cheap labor good. The West* bad. Free speech bad. Japanese-American judges** bad. Taking away private land to develop*** good. Silly farm boys**** good. Ranting good.
Please reconsider, and come visit us instead of those union thugs in China.
Your twin,
Kim Jong-II

Mike 1, it should be obvious that the only thing I'm any good at is plagiarism. :>)
Kirk, the only investment that would be worse than a righeimer campaign for higher office would be buying land on the moon, or Costa Mesa at this point. In fact, why don't you spend your money on something you at least get some return on- may I suggest a stripper or stripper pole for your living room?
Hate to say "I told ya so"; however, I knew the CC meeting was canceled due to vacation plans. The City Council bozos (minus Leece) are soooo transparent. Still anxious to see the 5th floor Doomsday Day Floor as we are calling it after the refurbishing. HCD should be shoved into the 2nd Floor in the next few weeks and after that the refurbishing will soon take place. With the locks changed, plans for offices being initiate; I can only think the city council is more than anxious to get more back-door deals done. Wonder whose family member, cousin, buddy was given the contract for the refurbishing? Dan Baker is the contact person in the City Manager's office who is in charge of this event.
a city councilmember pays his own way to China to help foster tourism and it generates all these comments, mostly hate? I know you may not like Righeimer but what is going on in your minds that compels you to post negatives on everything, even good things? This is why the majority of people cannot relate to you and support you. We may not like all that Righeimer has done but when the alternate choice is a bunch of complainers, naysayers, conspiracy wonks, etc. the choice is easy as to who to support. A bunch of constant complainers or a person working to increase revenues for the city on his own dime?
Doomsday, how do you know what went on in a meeting with the Sanitation District? Are you an employee?
Isn't he unemployed other than his council seat? Just asking, but that's my understanding, and if that's the case, he must have saved a lot of acorns from his Suncal days or someone special interest is footing his bill.
I agree with the Captain. Phasers on kill!!
Righeimer is going to where the money is and that is China. Look at everything in the store and see where it is made. Not a secret, China is the place. If Jim is successful getting more business into our city he should be supported, not attacked. What is wrong with you people?
Jennifer spewed:
"I agree with the Captain. Phasers on kill!!"
Get a life shill. Unlike the Riggmarshal regime, the Star Trek Universe was a democracy. Kirk was a warrior but a true leader, not a puffy little Napoleon.
Jennifer:
"Righeimer is going to where the money is and that is China. Look at everything in the store and see where it is made. Not a secret, China is the place. If Jim is successful getting more business into our city he should be supported, not attacked. What is wrong with you people?"
Translation:
How dare you question das Riggmarshal?
What "business" from China does our little general want to bring to Costa Mesa? Is he looking for a bunch of old-school COOLIES from the 1800s to replace our city workers with?
Maybe he's trying to get a deal on that contaminated dry wall to refurbish City Hall..
Best guess:
It's POLITICAL business he needs an answer for from our Chinese friends:
"How can me and my 3 buddies rule Costa Mesa as a totalitarian society and do good in business like you guys?"
Geoff, again the minions have failed to spot the true objective. When visiting your blog, it is obvious their grasp on reality begins to waiver. When the Master Jedi writes, it is for the sole purpose to inform, educate and edify. Seem that some among us have an addiction to “Three minute sound bites.”
The evidence is over whelming, Ligheimer went to convey his deep admiration for the open and transparent way the Chinese govern a large, free society.
While there, he will be working diligently with many young, ambitious individuals with hopes of bring back business specifically to assist the ailing Airlines’ at JWA/SNA.
Also, he will devote endless hours with the Ministry of Medicine, to encourage serious dialog with Hoag Medical and myriads of other health professionals in Costa Mesa. Also, he will be providing them with the latest Chinese Language version DVD supplied by MedCal, MedCare and CA Social Services, explaining in detail how to fill – file – collect services and financial compensation.
His devotion to creating safe environment for visitors from our newly acquired Sister(s), he will propose the purchasing all hotels, not for demolition, but use to accommodate the hundreds of Sisters who will be visiting for a month or so.

You won't get it if you don't read the link... scheeeeeesh.
Mike 1, don't you mean "Footballing" his bill?
Did anyone notice how pathetically scrawny and feeble Millard looked?
The man is like a broken record that spews the same thing over and over and over.
Why the hell would Chinese tourists buy their products back at the MSRP price from South Coast Plaza? And doesn't CM's own MarketPlace already sell their bootlegged goods? Why would they buy their own crappy faux products when they can afford real Louis Vuitton bags? I'm guessing that IKEA hasn't opened a store there yet.
Or, is it that CM's Harbor Blvd still has some prime lots that haven't yet been re-developed because his fellow developer friends can't secure construction loans? And that the "Harbor Blvd of Cars" doesn't one Chinese car dealership yet?
Also, CM's Westside is a prime beach-close location. He'll be luring, I mean, securing Chinese investors to drain MM's "swamp" to attract middle-class "young" families that can't afford Newps b/c they're strapped with student loan debts. Or maybe, just maybe, he's selling them a boat marina next to Banning Ranch...
Hey BM,
Millard actually did great at last Council. Were you there? At least he makes some sense when he speaks. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know, the racist thing gets in his way but I still like what he says.
And Joe, you are such a cowardly bully. Stop picking on Jennifer who happens to have a different opinion than you. Take a breath, relax, have another drink, it is all going to be OK, everything will be fine. That's a good boy.
BM
Millard was right on point.
The one I am worried about is Tom Eagan. His eyes looked like he has major health issues.
In addition to the Reserve Officers, perhaps we can have some EMTs on site in case he or Geoff West decide to kick the bucket. Eneredo
Righeimer will probably line up some businessmen in China that will develop the hotels he wants our tax dollars to buy up. He's all about the new world order.
I have a feeling if this went to a vote of the people, most people would want to keep our current sister city.
I suggest removing the alligators from the council chambers? Ho hum.

Your boy came in yelling "phasers on kill," using a girl's name and spouting the party line.
Now run along and chest-bump some teachers or try to intimidate baggage people at the airport. Call out and shout down speakers at Council meetings. Then hide behind parents and kids in Pop Warner.
There. Bullying.
Figured out who RickandJenn are. Righeimer...
Millard is a sick old man who doesn't have a life. His hatred of other races is no more than hatred he harbors about himself. Hell, I don't think he has changed shirts in the last 20 years unless he went to a Minuteman garage sale.
Come on, his continual tirade on cleaning up the west side is no more than saying, "lets make the west side more like Idaho".
He drive all over town in his beat up old car and points out signs to have taken down. I saw him the other day on n. Santa Ana Ave. and later over by Wilson and Fairview checking signs. He wasn't aware he was being watched I guess.
Was a whacko.
Pta Mom: Good someone pointed out what a deranged old idiot Mallard is. Have you looked at his yard? Worst house on our street and he wants us to clean up the city.
I hope he reads this. Hey Martin, there is a sale on old black shirts at Wallmart!
I thought that travel to foreign countries on city business was the job of the Mayor. Why is Riggy going instead of Mayor Monahan? Do Chinese eat little Irish people?
Seriously, why is Righeimer going?
I see the Chinese just bought the Balboa Bay CLub and the Newport Beach Coutr Club, maybe Righeimer is trying to sell the Fair Grounds again..
