Officer Guenther Recognized
VEHICLE RECOVERY OFFICER OF THE YEAR
The Costa Mesa Police Department today announced that officer Hans-Walter Guenther has been named Costa Mesa's 2012 Recovery Officer of the Year. Shown in the photograph above with Chief Tom Gazsi, Captain Les Gogerty and Captain Rob Sharpnack, Guenther was recognized at the Vehicle Theft Recovery Awards banquet this week. The event was sponsored by the Auto Theft Advisory Committee, a partnership between law enforcement, insurance and auto-related companies to reduce auto thefts.
OUTSTANDING EFFORT
According to the press release, Guenther's proactive enforcement throughout the city during 2012 resulted in his recovery of 18 stolen vehicles, 3 of which were occupied by suspects. His self-initiated efforts resulted in 5 felony arrests as well as the financial recover of $186,810 worth of stolen vehicles.
CONGRATULATIONS TO GUENTHER
Congratulations to Officer Hans-Walter Guenther for this outstanding achievement, and to all the men and women of the Costa Mesa Police Department who work hard to keep us all safe although working with a severely diminished staff. Speaking only for myself - but I suspect other residents of this city feel the same - thank you all for your continuing efforts on our behalf.

Always great news when one of our employees receives an award. Our employees are committed to excellent service and that's why Costa Mesa is still a great place to live. Congratulations Officer
Hans-Walter Guenther and the rest of the Costa Mesa Police Department!
God bless you Wendy for fighting the good fight and staying on council when it seems hopeless sometimes. I can tell you that both residents and employees of the city love you and a lot of us pray for you to have strength to keep fighting to keep costa mesa a nice place to live and work.
One of the many qualities that makes you unique is that youre not on the council for any type of personal gain nor do you have a destructive politcal agenda. You dont have a shady real estate/developer background which would lead you to vote in a shady city project. You truly serve for the good of the city!
We love you Wendy! Your actions and presence during that Huy Pham tragedy spoke volumes about your character and who you are.
Thank you for your service.
As a life-long liberal Democrat, I'm finding it very ironic that four of the leading protectors of Costa Mesa today are Leece, Genis, Leffler, and West. In my mind they represent the Republican Party in the past that we disagreed with, but always respected.
Politicians like Righeimer and Mensinger come off like the right-wing military dictators they used to have in Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina.
Come to think of it, anywhere in South America would be good for Riggy- he could help chop down the rainforest or something..
Leece For Mayor:
You make me want to puke.
Please don't attend the council meeting on the 21st because Righeimer annointed Leece to run ths show that night. So, she'll be "mayor for an evening"!
To Leece for mayor. 150% agree. This outstanding human being has been vilified, trashed and at every opportunity attempted to be humiliated by the 3 boys. Agree or disagree with her politics Wendy is one of the few caring, compassionate and principled people in government today. It sickens me to watch how the 3 boys treat a conservative woman who they know is an outstanding human being because she doesn't toe party line. As a very conservative leaning voter Mensinger, Righeimer and Monahan disgust me. They are the very type of political clowns who are costing our great party in the state. There needs to be changes and it stats with Baugh, Moorlach and now Righemeir.
Moorlach is still living off his purposes call of the citron investments . But where was he recently with the RDA and VLA issues. They guy is a one trick pony got lucky and has. Been living off that for years.
Mensinger claimed to be a cancer survivor. Knowing how these council members play fast and loose with the truth, did he actually go through radiation or chemotherapy or did his dermatologist burn off some suspect spots and now he trumpets he is a cancer survivor?
If he truly is then god speed and congratulations to you Steve but if this is typical of the misrepresentation you guys do then shame on you.
A lot of people puke or want to puke when they drink too much. Or realize that they sold off their ethics and self-respect, becoming tools for those who couldn't care less about Costa Mesa. Maybe it's that nagging voice in the back of their mind that says, "I've reached physical adulthood but I haven't progressed intellectually. I can't even support myself or my family."
Stevie's a "cancer survivor" like he's an "environmentalist." In a couple years we'll all be Bully Mensinger survivors.
I greatly respect Wendy Leece. She is superbly qualified to be on the Council. She works hard and conscientiously to represent us in the halls of power. And she’s a straight shooter, someone I trust.
I’ve known her since we competed against each other for the same seat on the school board in 2002. Once the term was over, Wendy approached me with the idea of working together on common interests such as the libraries, improving the Mobile Recreation Van, then Westside issues in general, and eventually city-wide issues.
We get along fine because we respect each other’s positions on those topics where we’re poles apart.
Councilmember Wendy Leece is a class act. It’s our good fortune to have her on the Council.
Dr. Onan Aka Terry K?
Regardless,
You also are deserving of my puke award. You maskarade as an elite intellectual but in reality are more like the class clown.
To Leece for Mayor and Another CM Conservative:
Compassion is a great quality but with Ms. Leece it is inappropriately applied. The expression "..the path to hell is paved with do-gooders" fits her perfectly.
All the compassion in the world will not solve our homelessness, drug, gang and fiscal problems. What will solve them is tough enforcement of our laws/ordinances, the elimination of entitlements to those who come to our city just for its perks and a reigning in of our expenses.
Leece may be a nice person, hard to disagree with that however niceness does not solve problems. Human nature is such that it takes a kick in the a$$ rather than a plead and prayer to get things done.
Sorry to disappoint you but her ideas are not helping our situation, they make it worse.
The mean evil councilmen you refer to who want to take away all your toys are really our best hope to solve our mess. I support them fully even though I don't agree 100% of the time.
Finally, your words about personal gain are unfounded. With so much transparency, so much to lose for so little financial gain, you are really just regurgitating the hater's playbook hoping something will stick.
Wow, this one went off the rails fast...
Yep, it doesn't take long for gutless anonymous commenters to hijack a comment thread. Maybe we should just refuse to post any comment that is submitted without proper identification of the writer. I'll have to contemplate on that.
Pot,
If you require proper ids, you will have few commenters.
This comment thread only has two identifed. The rest of us are anonymous. the hijacker started with someone you support. I assume you would require them to id themselves also.
Bill S.,
Sure - what's good for the goose, etc. Have to think about it more. Yes, the comments would drop like flies, but that's not necessarily bad. What would remain may be relevant to the topic at hand and would be made by folks with the courage of their convictions on boths sides of the argument.
Yes, I understand why many choose anonymity - fear of reprisal by those in power. That's a very sad commentary on the way things are in the city these days. I suspect the results of the "listening sessions" we're presently paying for are going to surprise and confound city leadership when the reports are all in. We'll see.
I would happily support you requiring us to id ourselves. It will cut down on all the hate filled posts and reduce the need to respond in kind. Make it so!
Geoff, please don’t make us ID ourselves. If you do, then Jim Fitzpatrick won’t have anything else to do all day! His entire life is wrapped up in posting on this blog as multiple personalities. If you pull the plug, Fitzy won’t be able hang himself with his inane posts in front of such a large audience. I consider this blog to be a form of public service. If you prevent him (and us) from showcasing his egomaniacal, self-absorbed, loser behavior, then the people of Costa Mesa may start to buy into his crap all over again. Please don't do it! Jim Fitzpatrick should be banned from public service once and for all.
Hey Loser P.
Not one of these posts came from Fitz. Your hate filled suckup to Geoff is a perfect illustration why I like the ID concept. I hope it gets adopted.
Congratulations to Officer Guenther!
We have a great PD here in Costa Mesa.
Wendy Leece is a great councilwoman!
She has my full support and admiration.
Congratulations to Officer Guenther and thank you to all our police force.
Every time I read about our Costa Mesa police, I’m alerted to and made appreciative of another facet of their work that I hadn’t even thought about. My education extends to a Register article a few weeks ago which enumerated several legal decisions in addition to “Miranda” that police officers have to make on the spot.
On the other hand, when I regularly read about the misdeeds committed by other law enforcement agencies, I’m reminded of the strength of character and outstanding self-discipline of our Costa Mesa policemen.
I pray that through these trying times our current police force will stick with us and that our department will be able to find and train candidates worthy of the Costa Mesa Police Department and able to provide the same honest, respectful, and excellent service we have become accustomed to.
I hope also that City Council will realize the need for reinstating sufficient staffing for the special units that have been disbanded or reduced and will also recognize that ensuring public safety is a primary obligation for any city council.
