Who Is This Guy, Indeed!

TONY WHO?
Yesterday afternoon the Daily Pilot,  HERE, ran a story announcing that someone named Tony Capitelli is running for Costa Mesa City Council in November, 2014.  In the dozen or so years I've been following local politics I don't recall anyone ever officially announcing a run for city council in my city quite this early.

ANOTHER ONE OF DANA'S BOYS
So, who is this guy, Tony Capitelli?  Well, his bio tells us he comes from the same womb that brought us the carpetbagger, Jim Righeimer.  Yep, Capitelli is another one of Dana's boys, he works for our congressman, Dana Rohrabacher, in his Huntington Beach field office.  He's young -  28 years of age -  and educated, having  attended Concordia University.  He lives in town with his wife, Julie, and is a nice looking young lad.

WHO IS HE, REALLY?
When I started looking into his background I found his campaign web page, all set and ready to go, HERE.  I thought to my self, "Wow, here's a young guy all ready to go, but what does he think?  Where has he been?"  So I checked out his web page and became very depressed.

GOD IS ON HIS SIDE
As I scrolled through the various pages on his web site I came across several very familiar phrases.  He invokes God frequently, so that must mean he's a great guy, right?  Well, in his "blog" section on that web site he tells us why he's running for city council.  He tells us that God put him on that path.  OK.

UH,OH...
Then he tells us that "Civic Leaders of the past have lead us down the path of fiscal irresponsibility to the extent that this city could not even perform one of its most essential and basic functions, maintenance of its roads and streets."  Does that have a familiar ring to it?  Well, it should, because it's right out of the OC GOP song book that Jim Righeimer and Steve Mensinger have been singing for a couple years, although in young Mr. Capitelli's case it might be a hymnal.

THE CURRENT COUNCIL..
Looking over his "Issues" page on the web site we find that "our current council has dug us out of seemingly unrecoverable fiscal mess, and begin the process of rebuilding."  He goes on to tell us that, "our streets should be improved to be more friendly to pedestrians and bikers.", although I suspect he meant to say bicyclers.  "Dug us out"?  What about that unfunded pension liability?  What about our "terrible streets"?

HIS TAKE ON PUBLIC SAFETY
He tells us that, "Due largely to prison realignment in California, our city has seen a noticeable spike in property crime over the past two years.", but manages to not mention the part his pals already on the council played in that crime spike by refusing to properly staff the CMPD, and their complicity in officers leaving in droves due to the toxic workplace they created in this city.  He does tell us, though, that, "the safety of our families should be the top priority of local government."

"RESTRUCTURE ONLINE PRESENCE" - NOT MORE COPS
Capitelli's solution to the crime issue is for the City and CMPD to "restructure their online presence to better communicate with residents on how they can take simple measures to prevent property crimes."  He tells us that "these kinds of creative approaches will keep our families safe."  Then he tells us,  "A safe city results from a community that cares."  Gag me!   No mention of more police officers.  No mention of new police tactics or deployment models.  No mention of use of reserve officers.  No mention of the School Resource Officers.  No mention of stopping the outflow of officers.  We don't know yet if he shares Rigeimer's hatred of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

JUST LIKE MANSOOR...
Well, I've not met this young fella yet, but I'm getting exactly the same feeling about him I had when I first met Allan Mansoor.  I liked him and had hope for him.  He turned out to be a HUGE disappointment to me and many others because, once the OC GOP hierarchy got their hooks into him, he just began to spout the party line.  It looks to me like young Mister Capitelli - who is probably a nice, young guy -  has begun echoing Dana's other boys earlier in his career.  It looks to me like he's aligning his sites on Dana's job down stream, and that he'll just follow the lead of Scott Baugh, Jim Righeimer and, of course, Dana to get there.  We'll see.

WHAT ABOUT THE "BENCH"?
And, I find myself wondering what effect his presence on the November, 2014 ballot on other loyal footsoldiers who have been queing up to run with Righeimer next year.  There are only two seats available - Righeimer's and the one currently occupied by termed-out Wendy Leece.  What of Righeimer's protege, Ethan Temianka?  What about Colin McCarthy or Rob Dickson or even Jimmy Fitzy?  Does this new "fair-haired boy" shove them aside?  Seems likely.  So much for loyalty...

Well, Monahan has been waning in his duties and presence as of late. Perhaps this guy is aligning himself to be appointed should Monahan step down.

Lets be honest, it's not beyond these guys to set this theatre up behind the scenes and then trot him out.

The minor league bench would appear deep, but like the Angels, lacking in real talent.

God's plan... god, that just drives me nuts, too.

I suspect that they realize Righeimer isn't going to make it. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Riggy takes a job elsewhere. He's wanted to for a long time, and with his negative record here, he's not going to be re-elected.

Geoff, did his bio ever actually indicate that he graduated from Whittier Law School?

Hey...check this out. This from the racist, who doesn't even know which side he's on:

TONY WHO?

We just saw an announcement from some guy named Tony Capitelli, who apparently just fell out of bed and has decided to run for the Costa Mesa city council.

"The guy sounds like a Leece clone as he praises charities and his church, blah, blah, blah. He then tells voters that he needs their help; and his most important request is for prayers. Prayers? That's what he says".

Capitelli is not listed as a licensed CA attorney.

Isn't he related to Newport's mayor? I thought the CM heir apparent was McCarthy.

I have lived here for 23 years and have never seen the streets in shambles. There are the occasional potholes and the regular wear and tear but every council kept them maintained. In fact, they were assessed as being right at the acceptable level of repair, but that was deemed insufficient by Mr Righeimer. I am tired of people making this city sound as if it's Faluja with criminals behind every door and bombed out streets.

It is a growing city that needs good public safety coverage and a long-term plan for the pension payments. I think Irvine has the right idea these days.

If I want to be saved, I will go to church, not the polls.

As dismayed as I am about the fact that Rorabacher can keep getting elected after 20+ years of doing absolutely nothing but being a clueless blowhard, this news is an important reminder. Dana and his boys live to get elected. Nobody else in Costa Mesa takes getting elected as seriously as these guys. Combine that with a generally uniformed and uninvolved electorate in Costa Mesa and we get clueless blowhards like Mansoor, Bever, Mensinger, and Righeimer.

So we'll need some very strong candidates emerge who are fully committed to the fight in order to counter the relentless push of Dana-wannabes using Costa Mesa to advance their bonehead political agenda at all costs. I hope those people are out there, but if they are, they're already behind mini-Dana/Riggy, errrr Tony.

And don't count "the bench" out just yet. They'll probably run a few of those guys just to split votes amongst the many voters who don't know who any of these people are. That's how Monahan squeaked in last time.

It really isn't a good strategy to split your own vote. You are better off with one solid candidate, or in this case two as it is a vote for two.

I suspect that the strategy here is Tony has announced early to clear the field for a Jim/Tony ticket.

I would be surprised if anyone else from the council majority side would file to run. But then I have been surprised before!

Bruce is 100% correct. The "shiny new penny" Tony Capitelli, probably isn't worth two cents, but that anonymity is what they need.
Jim needs a strong "unknown" to combat his high negatives. No one expects Tony to win. That's a given. What they need is a strong second candidate that can counter-effect the negatives Jim brings to the ticket.
Tony fits that hand bill perfectly....He's a Charlie McCarthy puppet to Righiemer's Edgar Bergen.
