Tony Dodero New Costa Mesa Public Information Officer

GOOD NEWS FOR COSTA MESA
Costa Mesa "leaders" announced today, HERE, that former Daily Pilot Editor Tony Dodero will become the City of Costa Mesa's new Public Information Officer.

OK, BUT...
In that press release no mention about who he reports to directly - one would assume CEO Tom Hatch - nor whom, if anyone, reports to him.  Bill Lobdell - who held a similar job before he bailed out and went to the Irvine Company - had the folks at CMTV reporting to him.  Nobody was around at City Hall who could answer those questions.

SLIM NEWS ABOUT THE JOB
The press release speaks almost exclusively about Dodero's background.  The one line that DOES address his job with The City says, "Dodero will be responsible for managing the city’s media relations efforts and expanding the public’s awareness of special events, programs, services, policies and projects."

STARTS TOMORROW
Dodero will begin his new assignment tomorrow, August 11, 2015.

A GREAT GUY, SKILLED COMMUNICATOR... AND MY FRIEND
A word on this subject.  I've known Tony Dodero for more than a dozen years.  He was the Editor at the Daily Pilot when I first began writing commentaries in that fine newspaper.  He's become a friend over those years and I respect his journalistic skills and his integrity.  I look forward to his contributions to the communications coming out of our city very much.  That being said, if we hire one more manager for that 5th Floor bunker I'm afraid the building will simply topple over from being top-heavy.

YEP...
Good luck, Tony.

This position was NOT advertised on the website. Not very transparent. Why do we put up with hiring a top-heavy city "government" when the council majority wanted to fire all the city employees? Isn't this a position that can be contracted? Bill Lobdell was a contractor until Steve, Jim and Gary hired him as a full-time employee and added a position for Dan Joyce. Steve called his hire the "best deal around"...

We all know how well that went.

He is NOT an officer. "Public Information Officer" is a position with the CMPD. This PIO is a spinmeister for the upcoming General Plan update and November elections.

Why do we need to hire someone for "...expanding the public’s awareness of special events, programs, services, policies and projects"? What are the politicians for? Any why is it such a secret to whom he reports to? Friend or foe, this guy has a long way to go to prove his worth.

True, Teresa. Geoff, he may be a friend, but I hope he has no illusions or "delusions" about what this job is going to be. I guess he'll find out soon enough.

Tont Dodero is an exceptional and ethical communicator with a backbone; he'll handle media relations with a "just the facts, ma'am" approach. He's a true pro and will be an asset to the city of Costa Mesa.

Still living in another country, but I´m also been updated with news through the "A Bubbling...", the Daily Pilot and other media sources. Tony Doderho is perfect for this job. He worked as journalist and editor for the Daily Pilot, taught courses at OCC, and has been involved in the Costa Mesa community through Nonprofits. I´m glad that the city has decided to hire someone whose ethics, work, and professionalism will never be challenged. Congratulations Tony from the distance.
