Monday Planning Commission Meeting Agenda
MIGHT BE ANOTHER LONG NIGHT
The Costa Mesa Planning Commission will meet again on Monday, February 23, 2015 in the City Council Chambers beginning at 6:00 p.m. You can read the agenda HERE. Even though one controversial item has been shoved out to next month, this one still could go long.
ELECTING NEW LEADERS
The first order of business will be to elect a new Chairman and Vice Chairman. This process was pushed out from the last meeting because current Vice Chairman Rob Dickson was absent due to the birth of his daughter that day. It will be interesting to see which of their peers the commission selects to lead them for the next two years. As I said earlier, I won't be surprised if Dickson is chosen as Chairman.
13-UNIT DEVELOPMENT TO BE CONTINUED
Public Hearing #1, HERE, is the 13-unit residential development at 2880 Mesa Verde Drive East, the site of the current First Church of Christ Scientist. According to the staff report, this item has been requested to be continued to the meeting of March 9th to permit community outreach. It is my understanding that two such meetings have already been held. This project, when it is eventually discussed, will likely get some serious massaging by the commission and the public because the developer is requesting some significant variances to open space requirements.
A BIGGER, BETTER GANAHL LUMBER
Public Hearing #2, is the creation of a new Ganahl Lumber Hardware Store and Outdoor Storage Yard at 1100 Bristol Street, adjacent to its current operations, which would be closed following the completion of this project. This is the first step in this project by the applicant, Ganahl Lumber Company - a business which has been in operation for over 100 years. You can read the entire more than 1,600 page staff report HERE. Give it some time to download! The staff is recommending approval of the project, subject to the conditions of approval and mitigation measures. For fun, go to page 764 and review the series of aerial photographs of the site dating back to 1927.
AN UNUSUAL EASTSIDE EXPANSION
Public Hearing #3, HERE, is the expansion of a residence at 456 Abbie Way on the Eastside of town. This one is asking for significant variances in the rear yard setback requirements. This property abuts Harper School property.
SMOKING, VAPING AND HOOKAH ORDINANCE
New Business #1, HERE, is a discussion of a proposed amendment tot he city's Municipal Code regarding vaping, smoking and hookah establishments. The following image is extracted from the staff report and illustrates the issues under consideration.

2 Comments:
I wonder whether that Abbie Way project is preparing to be yet another rehab residence?
Eleanor, I hope there is something in the ordinance about them being too close to schools. There is one on Joanne and Placentia that should not exist, especially next to Estancia High.
