Civic Center Park May Be OUT as Homeless Site
In a very interesting development, this morning the City of Costa Mesa issued a press release announcing that the Civic Center Park site originally earmarked as the location for Supportive Housing for Costa Mesa Homeless folks, is NO LONGER the primary venue under consideration. You can read the entirety of the brief press release HERE.
WHAT'S CHANGED?
This is a curious change of direction. I sat through the study session in which this issue was discussed earlier this month and, based on what we were told at that time, the ONLY option in the city for such a facility WAS the Civic Center Park location. I wonder what's changed?
COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS STILL SCHEDULED
In any event, the City will still hold two back-to-back community workshops on January 15th and 16th from 6 - 8 p.m. in City Council Chambers to present the issue to the public and to receive input FROM the public.

Is anyone surprised? IF they do this type of project, it will be dumped on the westside. Millard will have a hissy fit!
Make sure they put the new "westside CM" logo right near the project.
How about a park in Mesa Verde?
Oh, how I love to watch the antics in CM! Run by buffoons....
Somebody probably read the deed to the property. It was designated Institutional/Recreation (IR) and changing that could screw up the City's right of ownership. Same thing as the Fairgrounds, TeWinkle Sports Complex, and Fairview Park,
(all public spaces targeted for "re-development" by this current cabal). Having a City Staff that used to know these things was a benefit this City and it's residents can no longer take for granted. Much of these restrictions were written into the original transfer of the SAAB property by the War Dept. Proper governance takes time, study, and procedural process, something our Fire, Ready , Aim crew doesn't much cotton to.
There is a price for losing institutional knowledge, but really, how long would it have taken for them to do a title search?
Perhaps the city should buy one of the vacant buildings in our once thriving industrial area and renovate. Its not being used for anything else.
Perfect Idea Coffee! Maybe next to the new work condo. project where the junkyard currently is?
How about using the 5th floor at City Hall for housing?
It would sure cost the good citizens less than the goofballs are costing them now!
How about putting it in another city? Maybe near Hoag so medical runs will be closer. People from Newport support the SOS facility - seems only right.
Hey, hey not so fast! Fifth floor also has the FD on it :)
Maybe something near Baker and Redhill could work.
What changed? Maybe someone on the council remembered it's an election year!
The people who love Fairview Park are alienated, (even the ones who voted for Righeimer say they never will again) the folks by "Westreef" and the Eastsiders group over on Tustin know campaign donors and buddies get variances and long time residents get s***. maybe someone wised up to how many voters he's alenated and decided he couldn't afford to lose more.
