Another Voice Heard From...
A NEW, CREDIBLE VOICE IS HEARD
Tonight Tom Johnson, highly respected former publisher of the Daily Pilot and co-publisher of the fledgling Newport Mesa Daily Voice, gave us his take on the Fairgrounds sale issue in a painfully personal commentary in the Daily Voice. You can read it HERE.
AN INSIDER'S PERSPECTIVE
Johnson, a man who has for years moved freely within the circle of folks who are the movers and shakers in our community, provided us with a unique perspective on this subject - that of a man who considers folks like Dave Ellis his friends.
HE'S RIGHT
His analysis of this situation is right on the money and his solutions also track with what many others have suggested. I'm grateful that he stepped up and provided us with his view on this issue, difficult as it must have been.
IS THE GOVERNOR LISTENING?
So, we have yet another credible voice calling for a major re-vamp of the Fair Board. I wonder just how many of these voices it will take before the governor hears them and replaces the current Fair Board with residents who actually care for the well-being of the Fairgrounds?
HERE'S MY OPINION, GOVERNOR
In my opinion, the governor should 1) stop the sale of the Fairgrounds and write it off as a bad idea proposed by a few greedy individuals intent on making a huge profit from the transaction and, 2) sweep the slate clean by replacing the current Fair Board with folks who won't view it as payback for political favors and/or contributions made in the past. He should select members of the community with solid business backgrounds and who have demonstrated through previous public service that they know how to nurture, guard and operate the treasure that is the Orange County Fair and Events Center.
THE CITY SHOULD CONTINUE WITH ITS PLANS
In the meantime, and regardless how the sale scheme plays out, the City of Costa Mesa should move forward briskly with their plans to produce a General Plan amendment to solidly codify the uses on the Fairgrounds property and further lock it in by placing it on the June, 2010 ballot to protect the Fairgrounds from future capricious acts by other Fair Boards or elected officials tempted by financial gain.
FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT...
Tonight's Christmas selection is chosen specifically because our community has such folks as Tom Johnson, who will speak out on issues although they may cause themselves personal pain.
