Dave Ellis Attacks Bob Ooten - Really?

OOTEN'S COMMENTARY
On March 30, 2013 Costa Mesa Sanitary District Director Bob Ooten published a commentary in the Daily Pilot, HERE, in which he defined his decision to forgo the stipend he would normally receive for his service on the board as a way to offset some of the costs the District incurred during their legal challenge to Jim Fitzpatrick's claim that he was entitled to hold a seat on the Board despite two separate legal opinions that holding that seat and one on the Costa Mesa Planning Commission formed a conflict.  You may recall that this fiasco went on for months before Fitzpatrick finally resigned his Sanitary District Board seat rather than continue the legal wrangling.

PIT BULL ATTACKS - WHY?
Over the weekend OC GOP uber-operative Dave Ellis penned a letter to the Daily Pilot that just dripped in sarcasm, challenging Ooten's sincerity in his earlier commentary.  You can read his contribution to the "Smart Ass Hall Of Fame" HEREI'm trying to figure out what would prompt Ellis, who is NOT a resident of Costa Mesa nor is a ratepayer of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, to exercise his limited, but caustic, critical skills on a mild-mannered, sincere public servant like Bob OotenI mean, what's his interest in this issue?  Does he have a dog in this fight?

OH, NOW I UNDERSTAND...
As I considered that question I realized that Ellis is a cohort of Buck Johns and Fitzpatrick has recently been shilling Johns' EB-5 visa plan to wealthy Newport-Mesa residents.  In fact, Fitzy's recent communication on the subject described Johns as a "Titan of Industry" - not a surprising description for a bootlicker like Fitzy to use for one of his benefactors.  For more on the Ellis/Johns relationship, just Google "Dave Ellis+Buck Johns".

JUST WHO IS DAVE ELLIS?
We need a little perspective here.  You need to know that Dave Ellis - who prefers me to refer to him as "David Ellis" - fancies himself a kingmaker locally.  He's presently a member of the 32nd Agricultural District Board of Directors - the Orange County Fair Board - and apparently was one of the major players behind that group's attempt to buy the Fairgrounds on the cheap a few years ago.  Following a long investigation by a group approved by the current Fair Board, that issue has been delivered to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

A PLAYER OF DIRTY TRICKS?
Ellis has also long been involved in local politics, representing many local politicians in their quest for office - including current Newport Beach councilwoman Leslie Daigle in her campaign when she was challenged by current Orange County Register columnist Barbara Venezia.  Venezia dropped out of the race when the Ellis-directed campaign began attacking her husband's business.

SOME READING MATERIAL FOR YOU...
Let me provide you with some interesting reference material about Dave Ellis.

On 11/28/2002 Anthony Pignataro authored a piece in the OCWeekly titled, "Backstabber (Ellis screws friends and enemies alike)", HERE.

In 2007 the Newport Beach Voices blog offered  an entry titled "King David Ellis of the Orange County Fair," HERE.

Early in March, 2011, Vern Nelson published an item on the Orange Juice Blog titled, "Who is Dave Ellis?  A Portrait of our Fair Board Chairman", HERE

In June of 2011 Chasen Marshall published an entry in the OCWeekly titled, "David Ellis Opens Up About the Fair Board Foundation, the Appraisal and His Reputation", HERE.

And, just a few days ago, InlandPolitics.com published an entry that includes references to Ellis titled, "DA Advisor Entangled In Second Political Prosecution", HERE.

OPINIONS, PLUS SOME FACTS...

I make no claim about the "facts" provided in any of those links, but they may give you a view of Dave Ellis and his modus operandi that might be helpful to you as you try to answer that question above: "What's his interest in this issue?I wondered, for example, whether Buck Johns has retained him to attack Ooten for his part in the challenge to Fitzy's position on the Sanitary District Board.  It's just a question that seems reasonable to ask under the current circumstances.

DON'T MESS WITH DAVE...
I can tell you one thing, though, from personal experience.  Don't let that smiling face, above, fool you - Dave Ellis is not a guy to trifle with.  I've found his sense of humor limited to only those clever comments he authors - like his attempt to pillory Ooten in his most recent public pronouncement.  He doesn't take kindly to criticism.

WAITING FOR HIS CALL...

History tells me that I will soon have a communication from Ellis, complaining about this entry and accusing me of trying to defame him - kind of like what he did to Ooten.  Of course, I've done nothing of the sort.  I've just provided information from my personal experience with him, an opinion of his attack on Ooten and links to information that will help you with some perspective on him.  He has my number...

Reading your two posts today, this one about Ooten, and the previous one about the water company brings up some thoughts:

you talk about the pitbulls attacking Ooten here. Why not ask why pitbulls are attacking the water company also? Different pitbulls but they have something in common:
Ellis doesn't live here and you call him out on it. John Earl, the notorious liar who refuses to do the pledge of allegiance or an invocation, and his cohort Miss Information (aka Debbie Cook)don't live here either yet you link his lying blog and her inaccurate blog columns as if they are gospel. They are non resident pitbulls too.
Ooten not taking money for something he did not attend does not seem like such a personal sacrifice. He also claims he doesn't need to attend because he already knows the content. Maybe the San District Directors can all save us money and not attend things that teach them what they already know?

Really? for him to really pay it back he should ATTEND a meeting where he is entitled to his stipend and request no stipend. Ooten apparently will NOT attend the meetings, thus NOT ENTITLED to a stipend. How is not taking a stipend you are not entitled to a form of paying back the legal bill? Convoluted thinking. No wonder the trash contract doesn't get bid out with this kind of thinking. We elect these types?

The question of how many meetings I would attend and not request meeting reimbursement for came from Fitzpatrick when I was discusssing my pethod of paying down the public'e legal cost at a CMSD Board meeting.
David Ellis made a Public records request for information on my meeting attendence, which according to him staff provided.
I called David Ellis and told him I likely could be helpfull in his research on this subject, becuase I had a record of the meetings I attended and did not request the meeting reimbursement for.
He was rud and vulgar and said he had all the imformation he needed.
I told him I would pay his $1.00 as a member of the public. He told me he lived in NB not in the Sanitary District.
He said over and over he would be sastisfied if I wrote the District a check for what I had committed to pay. I ask him if he had read the September 27,2012 article where I outlined that I would cut my meeting reimbursement requests to keep the cost below $1 total for each residential parcel. It will take me three years to pay what I committed to do.

I will ask the GM to reduce the budgetted Board meeting expenses to reflect the decrease in District costs that is occuring. I am reducing the District Board member meeting expenses.

As I read Ooten's comments, he can't spell nor figure out technology. Yet Geoff West has goven he and all his other friends a free pass. West is regularly seen with one of the good ole boys at lunch.

Can anyone translate Ooten for the rest of us? The guy is not going to meetings yet wants is to believe his hocus pocus math?

Since David Ellis, Fitzptrick and at least one other person are interested in the meetings I attend and the meetings I ask for reimbursement I will post this for April 2013. I attended 5 meetings in April 2013 for which I could be reimbursed and I will submit a meeting reimbursement request for two meetings.

The attendence at meetings is a discussion I had with David ellis on the phone. I told him I had attend meetings I had not ask for reimbursement for, but after a loud dicussion he concluded that he had the information from the District that he was looking, so I concluded he wasn't interested in the facts, but seeemed to have his mind made up as to what he was going to write about.

We did discuss his services and I ask if he did probono work for a client. He respectfully declined to answer.

I am a registered Republican and have had the parties endorsement and was featured on one of their slate mailers in one of my three elections. I am actually looking forward to meeting Mr Ellis.

Bob Ooten. I sign this because the last comment I made I inadvertently signed in as anomymous.

ebonics,
Thanks for the early morning chuckle. You criticize Ooten for YOUR inability to comprehend what he wrote with a comment that, itself, borders on the incomprehensible.

Oh, yes - I CAN be seen around town having lunch with a member of the Sanitary District Board - Mike Scheafer - you know, the man who has been a life-long community activist in Costa Mesa. Right now he's ONLY the Chairman of the 60th Anniversary Celebration Committee, a member of the Sanitary District Board, heading up the Fish Fry effort again, is active with the Boys and Girls Club, was the President of the Board for the Costa Mesa Senior Center Corp and a former councilman and Parks and Recreation Commissioner. Yeah, that guy. And, he's my good friend.

Geoff West,
You need to stop hanging around with CM losers and go make yourself some new, cool friends in Newport where all the bosses are. Then maybe you can earn some REAL money selling chopsticks and visas to the Chinese.. If not, then have you tried mobile car washing?

This is getting very confusing. Since Mr. Ooten is reading/responding herein I would like this cleared up:
Mr. Ooten, are you claiming ur "paying" the district money by NOT going to meetings where you would get a stipend
OR
are you in fact doing something-attending the meetings-and requesting no pay? this is the only honest way to pay this down as you promised.

by not buying a car today you did not save/pay 20K. get it?
but, by working and not taking pay you did payback/save the district some money. but you must do the work , not vacation somewhere and say you didn't attend something and then claim you payed the district money. same with conferences you didn't attend. doesn't count. yes you saved the district some money by not attending but you were passive, you had no skin in the game. it cost you nothing to not attend a conference, thus you didn't pay the district back. time to start some trouble....

I don't understand the confusion. Let me translate for you... Ooten stated he is not being paid a stipend for the meetings he does attend. In addition, he did not attend a conference thereby reducing costs the District would had paid had he attended.

well sk, if in fact he IS attending and asking not to be paid that is GOOD. that is what he promised.

BUT, NOT going to a conference, even if that saves the district money, is NOT ACCEPTABLE if he is to keep his promise. He has suffered no loss by not going, thus he did'nt PAY anything.

well said alf? thought so. Miss Black? thank you. Terri? let's start some trouble eh, gal? we are both disappointed in our personal lives, let's ruin others !

how could sk not understand the confusion? Ooten has made a mess out of this noble attempt by trying to pad his expenses. keep it simple: GO TO MEETINGS,request no pay for those meetings. You get paid a lot, more than water a little less than school districe, per meeting. The thousands should be covered in no time. don't muck up the water by claiming you didn't go to a conference, you didn't flush the toilet, or any other "savings".

Fitzpatrick, when are you going to man up and get a real job? It is hilarious how you get all riled up over what sk says. Dude, you’re just jealous because people really like sk at the San District and even though she’s retired, they still respect her. The only thing we can say about you is that you repulse people, you basically sucked as a Director and the vast majority of the ratepayers who used to like you now can’t stand you. Good luck with that loser.

Ooten should flush less to save money. Now that's funny stuff. Now if he can get others on that board to join him that is something we could get behind.
