Good Crime News, E-Verify & Phu Nguyen

COSTA MESA VIOLENT CRIME DOWN
Tuesday evening, in the Daily Pilot online, Joe Serna reports that - according to FBI statistics - violent crime in Costa Mesa dropped 14% in 2009! You can read Serna's article, which includes the details, HERE.

GREAT
NEWS IN TOUGH TIMES
This is terrific news and a great testament to those brave men and women who patrol our streets and try to make our city safer. We only hope the current budget constraints, and the current salary negotiations, won't keep them from continuing to perform at such a high level. Kudos to the Chief Chris Shawkey and the men and women of the CMPD.

MANSOOR TOUTS E-VERIFY
Our formerly young, and former jailer, Mayor Allan Mansoor has been getting a lot of press recently. For example, the media is all abuzz about his latest scheme to quash what he perceives to be a marauding hoard of illegal immigrants in Costa Mesa - to REQUIRE the use of the federal E-Verify program. This was discussed at the city council study session Tuesday. I was not there, nor have I seen the tape of the meeting yet, but I'm told that Mansoor stuck close to his request as presented in the staff report.

ONEROUS DEMAND ON BUSINESSES
Not only will his plan require the City of Costa Mesa to utilize E-Verify, but he would require every NEW BUSINESS to agree to use E-Verify before a business license could be issued. Additionally, Mansoor also wants to require EVERY EXISTING business to use E-Verify on all it's current employees before a license renewal could be issued.

MANSOOR TO ASK FOR FUNDING FOR RESEARCH
It's my understanding that Mansoor will bring this item before the council in a future meeting, seeking authorization for the staff to do exhaustive research and create the appropriate legal documents needed to implement such a plan. This seems like an unnecessary, costly (in these difficult budget times) and intrusive measure - one that will certainly not endear Mansoor to the business community. Much like his "rule of law city" resolution, this is just another grandstanding move on his part to gin up votes for his faltering Assembly race against Phu Nguyen. Cindy Carcamo and Jon Cassidy of the Orange County Register did an excellent article late Tuesday on this subject. You can find it HERE.

ORANGE JUICE BLOG PIECE ON MANSOOR
There's a very interesting piece about Mansoor on the Orange Juice blog by crooner Vern Nelson that is part of a series of articles on that site about our aspiring assemblyman. I think you'll find this particular one especially entertaining. You can find it HERE. Enjoy.

A VIEW OF PHU FOR YOU
Finally, before I close, I want to provide you with some perspective. The following little video clip from YouTube presents a view of Mansoor's opponent in the 68th Assembly race - Phu Nguyen. I know you'll find it interesting and gives you a way to compare his background and qualifications to those of Mansoor.

Ah, Geoff, why don't you give credit where credit is due. Isn't it just possible that Costa Mesa's drop in violent crime is directly related to our Council's successful implementation of the ICE program? Those violent criminals were put on ICE holds and prevented from re-offending. Where's the thanks to Mansoor for that?? As far as Phu is concerned, why don't you research is background a bit more. His limitless financial resources and questionable ties to Vietnemese banking are all things that have not come up yet. Where's your investigation? Certainly no problem trashing Mansoor. I've been looking for a bit more balance in your blog but haven't found it yet.

I have to agree with Lex. Don't let your personal grudge get in the way. Mansoor has been doing a good job and the drop in crime is just further proof of it.

Lex, I don't doubt that SOME of the decline might have resulted from the presence of the ICE man in the jail. Certainly, some of the transgressors identified in the Costa Mesa jail by the ICE man were removed from their criminal path. However, many, if not most, of the offenders would have been screened at the county facility in any event.

I tried to get some clarification from the CMPD but it's a "training" week and none of the appropriate "brass" was available for comment.

Regarding Phu Nguyen, he's in the business of transferring money, right. One would assume someone in that business would deal with Vietnamese banks. I don't understand the problem here. If you have evidence about illegal acts on his part let's hear them. Otherwise, keep your rumors and innuendo to yourself.

Regarding "balance" - you don't see a Fox News logo anywhere on this blog, do you? What you see here is what you get - some facts and lots of opinion. I've never tried to present this as anything other than that. You'll just have to be satisfied with what I give you or just stop reading - your choice.

TommyBoy, I have no "personal grudge" with Mansoor. I only observe and report what I see. I don't think he's done a "good job" during his tenure on the council, including his time as mayor. He's demonstrated time after time an unwillingness to even consider any kind of compromise - or even to listen to opposing viewpoints. He's a hapless, under-educated, underachiever who always falls back on his "I've got questions" statement on issues where he cannot articulate just what those questions might be so they can be discussed.

If elected to the Assembly he will be a total disaster. To be effective as a member of the minority in that body he MUST be willing to compromise. He lacks that ability - among many other things he lacks.

I find it ironic that you and Lex choose to give Mansoor - a fifteen-year Sheriff Deputy who doesn't really understand the first thing about real law enforcement - credit for the work done in the field by the CMPD. I challenge you to find a single member of the CMPD that supports him or admires his "leadership".

I spoke with Phu in person the other day, and he's really an incredible guy. I like his community oriented vision. I think that's something that Mansoor offered so little in his eight years as Mayor and Council member. I do agree with you Geoff. Mansoor doesn't have enough education to handle big issues in Sacramento. Not being able to compromise is, in part, the result of not finishing a four-year university. He's got an AA degree. While this is OK, but don't we want in Sacramento someone who has demonstrated, among other things, tenacity and ambition at school.

Holy Moly, Pot Stirrer - your hypocrisy is STUNNING! Your entire campaign against Mansoor and your many public attacks and instances of attempted character assasination have been based entirely on rumor and innuendo!!!

Every single action of Mansoor's that you have branded as racist, from the day labor site to the Rule of Law resolution, has a far more rational explanation than your your personal attacks, based solely on rumors and innuendo mixed with your personal bias.

Thank you, professor C.,
I'm not an education snob, but you're correct - Mansoor lacks the ability to analyze and assess complex issues so he gets boxed into stumbling his way through a discussion. He lacks the ability to intellectually persuade others to his side of a discussion.

"Hypocrisy anyone?", why, thank you for your kind comment. However, your Mansoor-butt-kissing allegations would carry just a little more weight with some facts to back them up. His "body of work" - if you can call it that - for the past decade just drips with bigotry, and anti-Latino bias in particular.

I'm ready for your "rational explanations"... fire away.

Call it the way you see it, Geoff... didn't realize people looked to you as a true media source. Like you said, this blog is YOURS, and you can write what you want, including your opinions. What the heck's Mansoor gonna do when he loses to Phu - tend kennels?

mvm, gracias. eeeeeliz, very clever, but we don't want to pick on Rob TOO much. I miss his passionate pursuit of imperfection as he blindly follows Mansoor's misguided missteps. Have not heard a word from him here or on the DP blog for months.

Then you must be able to see the future. Personally I think you're a big fat liar with a grudge. I also think you call anyone a racist who doesn't agree with your warped views. But, I only observe and report what I see...

TommyBoy, once again a classy comment. :-) Nope, I don't have a crystal ball, just base my opinions on what I've seen in the past. As far as your assessment, I'm neither "big" nor a "liar", nor do I hold any kind of "grudge" against your guy, but I do admit to being "fat".

Clearly, we view your boy differently, which is just fine with me. Also clear is the fact that are not a happy reader here. Since I don't want to be responsible for your mental or physical health, please immediately stop reading this blog. Opposing viewpoints may be dangerous to your health so I suggest you let friends read it for you and provide you with a filtered summary to save you some angst.
