John Wooden

JOHN WOODEN HOSPITALIZED
Tonight, as I head for bed, I heard on the news of John Wooden's hospitalization, apparently in grave condition.

It saddens me deeply to hear that this wonderful man - arguably the greatest coach of all time, in any sport at any level - is near the end of his time on earth.

Stories about John Wooden abound, as do video clips on YouTube. He has been used as the example of coaching and life lessons and, at age 99 years, is still revered by men he coached a half century ago.

I close tonight with sadness in my heart, yet knowing that if John Wooden leaves us soon, he has most certainly left this world better for his presence. There is no better example of a life well-lived.

Please enjoy this recent clip of an interview with Rick Reilly to give you a clear view of this wonderful man.

Geoff, thank you for the video. Many fond memories (as a kid) staying up past 11:00 to watch UCLA on tape delay with my father. Our prayers and thoughts are for a true legend. Have a great weekend.

For my 25th wedding anniversary, I wanted to get a autograph of John Wooden for my husband who admires John Wooden. My brother, Michael was able to get me his home address, I wrote John Wooden with a simple request for the autograph. One week later, a large envelope arrived. Inside this envelope were 8 x 10 photos of John Wooden signed by him. One was with his wife, one was him in front of his many trophies, and one was his pyramid of success. All of these were signed. The photo of him & his wife, he personally wrote to us wishing us a happy anniversary. To say the least, I was shocked by his generous gift to us. The morning after our anniversary, the phone rang at about 7:00am, it was John Wooden calling US to ask how our anniversary was and to wish us a lifetime of happiness. We were shocked! It was the best anniversary gift ever! This wonderful man will be missed. And we will be grateful to have this memory of him.

Frank and Theresa, thanks for the notes. Nice to hear from any Scheafer, any time. :-)

Sadly, news of John Wooden's passing arrived late this evening. I suspect there will be many retrospectives of his life over the next few days. I thought this video clip was very touching.

A friend got a basketball signed by Wooden, dropped it by the hospital when my husband was having his first round of chemo. Meant the world. I cried and cried last night when I heard the news.
