Welcome to Costa Mesa Politics

CAUTION!
As we prep
are to celebrate this long holiday weekend, and with the campaign season now fully launched, just a word of counsel to the newbies on the campaign trail.... Watch Your Step!

HAZARDS AHEAD

This is uncharted territory for four of them, and it's full of potential stumbling blocks
, trip hazards, quicksand and other hazards. They will have to rein in that adrenalin and walk this path carefully lest they get snagged.

GULLIBILI
TY
One of the candidates has already learned this lesson the hard way. He, gentleman that he is, made the mistake of answering a telephone call from a person with a very specific agenda. He paid the price when that guy used the telephone conversation to skew his words and discredit him. It was kind of like accepting a bite from that Biblical apple.

VIPER DEN

Interestingly, reports have it that another candidate - also a naive neophyte - almost succumbed to a similar ploy and, even more interestingly, from a member of the same family of snakes.

UNBURDENED BY ETHICS
This is how it's going to go this year. Members of the improver-supported trio running for council will likely be the beneficiaries of dirty tricks as the campaign goes on. While they may not participate, some of their more rabid supporters - those unburdened by ethics - will attempt to influence public opinion by fabricating issues, distorting candidates statements and defaming those they don't support. We know this will happen because it's happened in the recent past.

FOREWARNED...

So, new candidates, when you answer that evening telephone call from someone you don't know who is eager to "help" you, proceed with caution. If you misspeak, or even answer questions straight out that can be manipulated and distorted, you may pay the price. Even if you are clever enough to avoid those pitfalls, certain elements in this city will still attempt to make you seem like Lucifer to the voters.

AGAIN - CAUTION
Welcome to the wonderful world of Costa Mesa politics. Watch Your Step!

EXCELLENT! Let them know what they are up against Mr. West! I have had some very good email exchanges with the one blowhole refers to as "the beard" as if a beard makes him less qualified. I have to agree with your observation the he just might be one to watch.

Funny that CMPress has not had an interview with Mayor Bever. Is it possible he can't get his calls answered by one of his own candidates?

2 years ago I witnessed first hand the venom that can be spewed from followers of the "improvers" agenda. Candidates need to have a thick skin, these followers will stop at nothing (including grossly uncalled for personal attacks through anonymous mailings.)

Cmtruth, Bruce Krochman and Matt S, thanks for the comments. Yep, we know how this is going to go, don't we.

I'll be away from this infernal machine for a few hours, so comments will be delayed until I get back to it. Have a great holiday weekend. You candidates - get out there and meet and greet your constituents over the holiday!

Too bad we can't just deal with the issues and how people stand on them. Let the electorate decide who they support based on what the candidates say.

The attack dogs and their alleged BS conspiracies are frustrated know-nothings who thrive on tearing down others while not having the stones to run for office themselves.

I look forward to a good campaign from Bever, Righeimer, Monahan, Foley, Sneen, and McEvoy. Moss needs to figure out which city he is running for office in, Reedy needs some time as well and Bunyan can't effectively serve the city while focused on Ms. Burciaga's son and Banning Ranch.

Lets hear specifics from Bever, Righeimer, Monahan, Foley, Sneen, and McEvoy and hopefully the electorate will eb able to make informed choices.

What the attack-dogs fail to realize is that marginally involved voters don't know enough about city politics to comprehend all the intricate conspiracy theories they weave.

Mr. Dickson, can you elaborate on the Burciaga-Bunyan connection for those not in the know?

Word on the street is that the boy had nothing to do with the shooting time will tell.

That's the connection. Burciaga's son was arrested by Costa Mesa's finest for being involved - in fact for being the alleged actual shooter - in the Shalimar shotgun attack of a 15-yr. old girl in broad daylight.

Mr. Bunyan repeatedly cited this shooting during the candidates forum earlier this month.

CMTruth, sorry, but I'm going with CMPD on this one, despite what the "word on the street" is. According to the Daily Pilot, Salvador Burciaga Jr. is also known as “Stalker” and “Sal.” CMPD gang unit keeps good tabs on the known gang members, and if they have solid enough evidence to proceed with a criminal trial, I'll defer to them.

Of course, Stalker is innocent until proven guilty, and time will tell what his ultimate fate may be. The evidence may not convince a jury.

Mr. Dickson you lost me or i lost you, i was referring to your comment
"Bunyan can't effectively serve the city while focused on Ms. Burciaga's son" not sure quite what you meant.

I also am going with cmpd's case until proven otherwise, word is some witnesses have come forward or are coming forward.
Regardless, this was a tragic event for all involved.
